Pumpkin Ideas: Light Up Jars

• 5 empty glass jars in various sizes, washed and soaked to remove any labels
• Measuring tape
• Scissors
• Orange tissue paper
• Small bowl
• Decoupage glue (we used Mod Podge Outdoor, $5 for 8 oz; Or Mix equal parts Elmer’s glue and water)
• Newspaper
• 1″ foam paintbrush or regular small paint brush
• Pencil
• Black construction paper

Step 1: You can use strips: Beginning with the tallest jar, measure the length from just below the lid to the center of the bottom of the jar. Cut about a dozen strips of tissue paper measuring about 1 1/2″ wide by the length of the jar. In a small bowl, mix 3 parts decoupage glue with 1 part water or use equal parts Elmer’s Glue and water)
Or you can use small tissue paper squares. Begin by cutting your tissue paper into strips and then into small squares.

Step 2: Decide what type of face you’d like your pumpkin to have.  You can choose to add on a face cut from black construction paper (this can be glued on later. Follow the below steps)  If you’d like your face to be clear you can take a marker and outline the areas you’d like to leave uncovered. Or use black construction paper and tape on the face you’d like your pumpkin to have.  Once the glued tissue paper has dried you may cut around your construction paper face with an xacto knife to reveal your pumpkins clear face.

Cover your work space with newspaper, brush a 3″-wide coat of the mixture to the outside of the jar from just below the lid to the bottom. Lay a strip of tissue paper vertically over the glue; with your hands, smooth it out and down to the center of the bottom of the jar. Repeat with the remaining strips, overlapping each about 1/2″. Let dry.  With squares, paint a small section on the jar with your glue mixture.  Add squares randomly overlapping when needed till the space is covered. Repeat until jar is covered.

Step 3:  Draw faces and other elements on black construction paper and cut out. Glue paper pieces onto the front of each jar when tissue paper feels dry.  If you are choosing a clear design, cut along the construction paper face shapes and remove them from your jar.

The design ideas are limited to your imagination.  You could use white tissue paper for ghosts and green for witches and Frankenstein.  You can try some more detailed silhouette cutouts and any variety of colored tissue paper.
